Detox Journal : Day IX (Additional Tips)

After the men who were carrying the Ark of the Lord had gone six steps, David sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. And David danced before the Lord with all his might, wearing priestly a garment. So David and all the people of Israel brought up the Ark of the Lord with shouts of joy and the blowing of ram’s horns.

2 Samuel 6: 13-15

Weight: 178 (-6 lbs)

Feeling: I forgot to mention in my previous post that on day eight, you stop taking the SP Cleanse pills (7 pills, 3 times per day). Instead you start to take the SP Green Food (5 pills, 2 times per day).  Another day and I can start to incorporate protein back into my diet in the form of fish and chicken.

My mother-in-law, Karen had done this particular SP Purification Program before under the guidance of a doctor. He suggested to her in addition to the SP Instructions, to also add 1 pad (tablespoon) of butter and Balsamic Vinaigrette (for the salads).

Today I went on a long run, for about 35 minutes, in the 3 PM heat. My legs were well rested after two days of rest, so it wasn’t a problem, but I began to be aware of a smell in my sweat. It is as if I was sweating toxins and stuff out of my pores. I’m starting to feel more energized during the day and not constantly exhausted. I expect the additional protein that gets added after yesterday will help even more!

Meals:

Breakfast- SP Shake (w/ blueberries, strawberries,  banana, flax oil, and water).

Lunch- Brown rice  with  frozen carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and a salad (spring mix w/ romaine, cucumbers, tomatoes, strawberries, green peppers and an apple)

Dinner- My mother in a law made me a delicious salad. It had mixed greens (some of which came from my little garden), artichoke hearts, grape tomatoes, avocados, cucumbers. Topped with two whole Portobello Mushroom caps. The salad was served with a side of Asparagus sautéed in 1 tbs of butter .   Also, I had a SP Shake.

Reading: The Hobbit,  2 Samuel .

Detox Journal : Days VI – VII

” I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. For i want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return. May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation – the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ – for this will bring much glory and praise to God.”

Philippians 1:9-11

There is not much to say about these two days. I enacted what I call the ‘hospitality card’ twice during these days. What is the hospitality card you ask? The hospitality card is what I keep in my back pocket to avoid legalism or performance during this cleanse. In the beginning of the cleanse, I agreed to eat ‘regular’ food under certain conditions: a wedding feast or some type of celebration where I couldn’t eat otherwise. Both of these criteria were met Saturday and Sunday when I attended my friends Paul and Hannah Mun’s wedding and on Sunday when Bridgette’s uncle visited from out-of-town and took us to a place where I couldn’t avoid eating meat. Do I feel bad? Not at all. Expect normal entries to pick back up tomorrow.

Detox Journal : Day III

” Samuel grew up in the presence of the Lord.”

I Samuel 2:21

Weight: ?

Feeling: I am starting to get used to the vegetables and fruit by now. I have noticed that it is taking me less and less food to satisfy my hunger. I actually have leftovers from my meals. I ran for 26 minutes today around Wilmore, up and down hills to both Asbury campuses and a back to my house on Bohicket. I am not sure if this stuff makes you sweat more but I am definitely sweating a LOT. I have been hydrating as well as often as I can – about 3-4 glasses of water an hour. I noticed a dark red, purplish color in my stool this morning, but realized it was from the beet that was in my Vegetable Drink. I still haven’t experienced an “euphoric” effect yet from the cleanse and actually fell asleep reading the Bible in the afternoon. Had my friend Joshua over for dinner (he is also doing the cleanse) and we juiced and ate vegetables.

Meals:

Breakfast- SP Shake (w/ blueberries, strawberries, banana, flax oil, pomegranate juice, and water) and an orange.

Lunch- Salad (Romaine Lettuce, Spring Mix, Green Peppers, Cucumbers, tomatoes), leftovers from dinner last night, and a SP Shake.

Dinner- Salad (Romaine Lettuce, Spring Mix, Green Peppers, Cucumbers, strawberries, cilantro from the garden) and acorn squash with brown rice, asparagus, broccoli, and mushrooms.

Snack - Freshly Made Vegetables Juice

Reading: The Hobbit,  I Samuel, and The Little Red Writing Book.

Detox Journal : Day II

” But Ruth replied, ‘Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people and your God will be my God.”

Ruth 1:16

Weight: 184.5

Feeling: The second day was in some ways worse and others better than the first. I am starting to crave processed foods and pizza and ice cream! While my overall energy may be down, I was still able to run about 2 miles and mildly lift free weights at the gym in the morning. As I was running; however, I did feel extremely weak. You have to be careful not to overdo it with physical activity when on the cleanse. I also was the kind of guy who would be very regular with his BM (bowel movements); however, even on day two, I notice that I have a BM 2-3 times per day and they are very dark and loose. Also, I noticed that my urine smelled very funny (like melting plastic or something sterile), probably because of the toxins that are coming out? But,  this is all normal, so do not worry if its also happening to you.

Meals: As my stomach begins to not stretch as much, it takes less and less food to fill it, so I’ve been starting to notice it requires less veggies to fill my stomach ** Also remember, that you should be eating twice as many vegetables as fruit during this cleanse.

Breakfast- Leftover SP Shake (w/ blueberries, strawberries, banana, flax oil, pomegranate juice, and water).

Lunch- Salad (Romaine Lettuce, Spring Mix, Green Peppers, Cucumbers) and sautéed mushrooms on top of cooked spinach and brown rice.

Dinner- Salad (Romaine Lettuce, Spring Mix, Green Peppers, Cucumbers) and sautéed Portobello mushrooms, asparagus, and green peppers with spaghetti squash. SP Shake

Snack - Freshly Made Vegetables Juice

Reading: The Hobbit, Ruth.

Detox Journal – How I Make my SP Complete Shake

During the Standard Process (SP) Purification, you must drink 2-3 SP shakes a day. The SP Powder that you mix in contains a lot of yummy stuff like wheat grass, Brussels sprouts, kale, ect. that is ground up and added to the shakes. This is what I use in my shakes:

Step 1:

Add the following to the Blender:

  • 1/2 of a banana
  • 1 cup of frozen blueberries
  • 4 frozen strawberries (optional)
  • A handful of spinach (optional)
  • 2 Tbs of flax seed oil (optional)
  • 1/4 -1/2 of a cup (depending on concentration) of Pomegranate juice (I use an organic purple carrot and Pomegranate juice) – (also optional)
  • 2 full scoops of SP Complete Powder
  • 1/2 cup of water

Step 2:

  • Blend for about 2 minutes or until there is equal consistency

Step 3:

  • Ensure that shake is properly mixed; neither too watery (if so add more frozen fruit), nor too thick (add more water).
  • Drink and enjoy!
* I have 3 shakes per day unless I am making my vegetable drink (then only 2 shakes)*

Detox Journal : How I Make my Vegetable Drink

I am trying to juice 3-4 times per week during this cleanse, but this isn’t necessary, nor should you supplement eating vegetables with juicing vegetables because you need the fiber from eating. For me, juicing gives me energy and vitamins, nutrients, ect.

What you will need: A juicing machine (I use Jack La’Lanns Power Juicer).

The Ingredients: You can add whatever fruit and vegetables you want (some like bananas don’t produce juice though, so read the juicer instructions before juicing something). This is what I use:

  1. 4 stalks of Celery
  2. 1 Beet (with leaves)
  3. 5 Carrots
  4. 1 Apple
  5. 1 Orange
  6. 1 stalk of Broccoli
  7. Spinach
  8. Kale

Step 1: Shopping. When shopping for produce to juice, I recommend buying organic. The reason is that you will be drinking a concentration of whatever you buy. If there are pesticides and other toxins in conventionally grown fruits and vegetables then you will be drinking this. An inexpensive alternative (that I have used) is making sure to peel apples, ect. Another helpful trick is to get additional plastic produce bags at the grocery and when you are unloading your produce at home, pre-make bags. I made three bags with the above ingredients and put them in my fridge. That way, all I have to do when I’m ready to juice is open up a bag, wash the produce, slice, and juice!

Step 2: Prep Work - When you are ready to juice, unload  your bag on a counter. Wash all the fruits and vegetables in the sink. Peel any oranges or lemons. Make sure to cut up and fruits or vegetables that won’t fit into the juicer (i.e. a giant beet).

Step 3: Juice – Carefully apply pressure to the fruits and vegetables as you run them through the juicer. You should come out with something like this:

Step 4: Stir and Serve – Make sure you stir up the various juices into one consistent color and then pour and serve. Enjoy!

Detox Journal – The Daily Regimen

Here is some additional information for those of you who are not familiar with what a Standard Process Cleanse is.

Program Basics: The foundation of the 21 day program is eating whole, organic, and unprocessed foods; taking whole food supplements; and drinking plenty of water. I am able to eat vegetables and fruit from days 1-10, but can add select proteins (fish and chicken) at day 11.

Detox Journal – What is This All About?

The idea of detoxifying my body came about fairly recently. My wife’s family are all chiropractors and my father-in-law in particular loves to recommend vitamins, minerals, supplements, ect. that help keep the body in working order. Lately, I have been contemplating  the way I eat and what I allow to go into my body. I recall my mother-in-law mentioning to me a while back that she has done a 21 day Standard Process Cleanse and it was beneficial to her health (See why our bodies need purification).

So my friend Joshua and I decided to take 21 days (since the Semester is over) and do the cleanse, but to also implement  slow down and be still before the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. According to Standard Process:

The 21-day purification program is so effective because it focuses on the whole person–making better food and beverage choices, taking whole food supplements, reducing stress, and increasing exercise. The purification program is more than just a diet. It encourages patients to adopt a healthier lifestyle, which, in turn, helps them look and feel better.

My desire in this cleanse  is to  not only detox from the toxins and chemicals that are within my body, but to also enter into a time of spiritual retreat: detoxifying my soul from the internet, movies, and TV (Lost is over after all).

This intent of this Detox Journal is to assist others who are going through or interested in going through a 21 day Standard Process cleanse. My hope is to write down each day my weight, what I ate, any side-effects, how I am feeling, ect.

For more information on the physical side of the detox, check out the whole food Standard Process Purification System.
